Stone selection
Marble or granite: questions before you choose
Compare marble and granite by appearance, intended use, care expectations and fabrication details. A practical guide to choosing your project’s actual stone.

Choosing between marble and granite is easier when you separate appearance from use and upkeep. Both are natural materials, and each individual selection deserves attention. A generic comparison cannot replace viewing the actual stone and discussing the application with the supplier.
Begin with the surface’s job
A busy kitchen worktop, a vanity, an entrance floor and a feature wall have different exposure and use patterns. Explain what the surface will encounter and how much visible change you are comfortable with over time. That conversation is more useful than asking which stone is universally best.
Compare the actual appearance
Marble often attracts attention through flowing veining and a softer visual character. Granite can offer fine patterning or more dramatic movement, depending on the selection. Do not choose from a material name alone. Ask to see the available slabs or a representative batch and consider how the visible pieces will be arranged.
Understand the care difference
Marble can etch when acidic substances contact the surface. Etching changes the finish and is different from a stain. Granite is generally less sensitive to common food acids, but its exact composition and finish still matter. Neither choice removes the need for appropriate cleaning and sensible protection around food preparation and hot cookware.
Compare like-for-like fabricated designs
The price is influenced by more than the material category. Slab dimensions, the chosen layout, edge work, cut-outs, joints and access can affect the quotation. Compare the same finished design in the candidate materials. A worktop price that omits a waterfall end or installation is not directly comparable to one that includes them.
Make a project-specific decision
View the stone with the cabinetry and flooring samples. Ask about the care requirements of the exact selection, the supplied finish and any recommended sealer. Write down the agreed material and scope so the order follows the decision. Natural Stone Collection can discuss stone options; Fabbro can help connect that choice to the cabinetry brief.
Your planning checklist
- Identify the use and exposure of the surface
- View the actual candidate stone
- Discuss care and visible ageing
- Compare the same fabrication and installation scope
